Tim Kaine and Mike Pence went head-to-head in the first and only vice presidential debate tonight.

The showdown between the Virginia senator and the Indiana governor may not be as contested as last week’s presidential debate — but there was still a lot at stake for each candidate.

Pence reportedly planned to divert the media conversation for Donald Trump, who has been the center of a bad news cycle since he squared off with Hillary Clinton. Kaine hoped to save face for Clinton and keep her from losing a slight lead in national polls.

The event was moderated by CBS anchor Elaine Quijano at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.

Yes, this debate has been a dumpster fire, but the exchanges over faith and abortion in the last 10 minutes were very good

Kaine on abortion: "Why doesn't Donald Trump trust women to make this choice for themselves? That's what we oughta be doing in public life."
