Strong Island is having a gas.
Motorists across Long Island saw long-awaited relief at the pumps as Suffolk and Nassau counties’ average gas prices dropped Wednesday to the second- and third-lowest in the state, AAA data shows.
The island’s average prices also dipped below $3 per gallon for the first time in months.
Long Island’s average gas prices dipped below $3 per gallon for the first time in months. Christopher Sadowski“It’s about damn time,” driver Jamie Ramos told The Post as she filled her tank at a gas station in Holtsville.
But the dip doesn’t necessarily mean Long Island drivers aren’t still getting burned as they fill up.
Nassau and Suffolk counties’ average gas prices stood at $2.95 and $2.94 for regular, while the national rate was $2.90.
Still, Long Island prices are likely to cause less sticker shock than the New York statewide average of roughly $3.09, according to AAA data.
Chemung County and its seat of Elmira, just a stone’s throw from the Pennsylvania state line in the Southern Tier, are the only places cheaper at the pump than Long Island — with gas averaging $2.93 a gallon, the data shows.
The secret behind Long Island’s better-than-everywhere-but-Elmira gas prices likely comes down to the invisible hand, said Matt McCalin, a GasBuddy petroleum analyst.
Statewide, New York’s average gas prices come in at $3.09 per gallon. Christopher Sadowski“It’s probably just simply good, old-fashioned competition and capitalism working at its finest,” he said.
“The factor is you’ve got a lot of competition [on Long Island], and you may have a lot of a situation going on there where one station is trying to undersell to another station across the street.”
Station-to-station gas prices across Long Island are currently ranging from $2.09 to $4.29 per gallon — a $2.20 difference, according to GasBuddy.
Some drivers said, despite the average remaining over $3 for some time, they have managed to find spots in the $2-and-up range recently, calling the hunt for the best bargain “a game.”
“It’s really all dependent on where you are at the time you need gas, but when I’m in Nassau County or out east near Riverhead — it’s over $3 every time,” driver David Duran said.
Motorists with bigger wallets or more discerning vehicles face a mixed bag.
Mid-grade gasoline on Long Island is currently averaging $3.51 per gallon, while premium fuel sits at about $3.83, AAA data shows.
Station-to-station gas prices across Long Island are currently ranging from $2.09 to $4.29 per gallon. Christopher SadowskiBoth are down slightly from a month ago, but remain higher than last year’s average at this time, according to the data.
McClain said motorists on Long Island and across the nation likely can expect falling prices into the New Year.
The only hiccup could be if President Trump’s saber-rattling against Venezuela takes a turn for the worse, McClain warned.
“If nothing happens there, we’re going to continue to see the downward trend even into the first couple of weeks of January,” he said.
For now, local drivers are taking all the wins they can get.
“I figured I might as well come out and fill up my tank now while it’s still $2.79 before Trump announces we’re invading Venezuela and it jumps to $5 a gallon,” joked one driver, who asked not to be named.
