A Louisiana children’s doctor has been nabbed after he shouted the N-word and punched a college student in what authorities believe was a racially motivated attack, police said.
Shane McKinney, a physician at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of simple battery in connection with the alleged assault near the Louisiana State University Lakes in Baton Rouge, the Advocate reported.
Police said the Southern University student-athlete had been walking Monday evening near Dalrymple Drive when the assailant punched her in the chest and shouted the N-word at her, news station KATC reported.
The attacker ran away, but authorities released a photo of him wearing a University of Alabama shirt and sunglasses.
A tip sent into Crime Stoppers led authorities to McKinney, who was interviewed and booked at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Our Lady of the Lake hospital system confirmed in an email to employees that one of its physicians had been “identified as the suspect in an alleged racially motivated attack that surfaced online and in the media,” the Advocate reported.
“At Our Lady of the Lake, we do not tolerate hate, discrimination, or violence by any member of our organization toward another person,” CEO Scott Wester wrote. “To be very clear, there are no excuses and no exceptions to respect one another and our community.”
The email didn’t identify the doctor, but said the employee had been placed on leave, the newspaper reported. A hospital spokesperson later confirmed that McKinney was the physician in question.
McKinney was released on $10,000 bond late Wednesday, the outlets reported.
