French President Emmanuel Macron baffled an Australian audience Wednesday — by bizarrely thanking Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his “delicious wife” during a trip Down Under.
“Thank you and your delicious wife for your warm welcome, the perfect organization of this trip,” Macron said in English, according to a clip on BBC News.
He added: “Thanks to you and Lucy, thank you very much, Mr. Prime Minister” and warmly shook hands with Turnbull.
In French, “délicieux” can mean both delicious and delightful — and Macron presumably was going for the latter even if his compliment was lost in translation.
The 40-year-old president’s command of English is excellent. Last week, he delivered a speech to the US Congress entirely in the language.
