The gamer who opened fire at a Madden video game tournament in Florida, killing two, had previously been hospitalized for mental illness, it was revealed Monday.
David Katz — who gunned down two high-profile players after losing in the tournament and then committed suicide — was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and had been prescribed medication for mental disorders, according to court records obtained by the Associated Press.
The records pertained to divorce proceedings involving Katz’s parents, who disagreed on the extent of the young man’s psychological problems. They divorced in 2007.
Katz opened fire Sunday afternoon at the “Madden NFL 19” tournament in Jacksonville.
Eleven other people also were wounded.
