Alleged mail bomber Cesar Sayoc made his first court appearance under heavy security Monday afternoon and was sent back to jail to await a bail hearing on Friday, according to a report.

Extra deputy marshals and court security officers were on hand when Sayoc was brought into Miami federal court wearing handcuffs shackled to a chain around his waist, the Sun Sentinel newspaper reported.

Sayoc, 56, sounded hoarse when he gave his name and answered several questions from US Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres during a brief appearance in the packed courtroom.

He also looked around the gallery, silently mouthing words to his sister Sabrina and nodding at a lawyer who had represented him previously.

Sayoc was busted Friday in Plantation, Florida, and charged with sending 13 pipe bombs to leading Democrats and critics of President Trump.

Two other suspicious packages described as similar in appearance have also been discovered, the latest of which was addressed to CNN and intercepted Monday morning at a post office near the network’s world headquarters in Atlanta.
