An Italian man shot and killed his father after mistaking him for a boar during an illegal hunt, according to reports.

The 34-year-old opened fire when he saw a shadow and heard foliage rustling as the two were hunting in a national park in Postiglione, according to the BBC, citing local media.

But instead of an animal, he struck dad Martino Gaudioso, 55, in the lower abdomen, according to the reports.

The son, who has not been identified, called for help and tried to stem his father’s wound, but Gaudioso was pronounced dead later at a hospital, according to the Independent.

The son was charged with culpable homicide and the rifles were seized by police. Their hunt was in a national park area where hunting is prohibited, local media said.

Michela Vittoria Brambilla, leader of the national animal defense league, on Sunday slammed the transformation of Italy’s woods and countryside into a “wild west,” and called for harsher punishment for illegal hunters, according to Agence France-Presse.
