SURPRISE, Ariz. — A Surprise man is accused of critically injuring his girlfriend’s stepfather by intentionally hitting him with his car after an argument.

Authorities say 19-year-old Chet Becker Jr. was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury.

At his initial court appearance Tuesday, Becker’s bond was set at $250,000.

He doesn’t yet have a lawyer who could comment on the allegations.

Court records indicate the incident occurred Monday night in a store parking lot after the victim argued with Becker about how the stepdaughter was being treated.

When the man walked in front of Becker’s car, he allegedly accelerated and struck him.

Authorities say the man is hospitalized in critical condition and in a medically-induced coma.

His name wasn’t released.
