Heartbreaking video shows an Indian man carrying the body of his wife to a burial site after she died of COVID-19 — as the country battles a catastrophic surge in infections.

The man, identified only as Swami, carried his deceased wife, Nagalaxmi, who died in Telangana on Monday, about two miles to the burial ground in the town of Kamareddy, stopping along the way to ask for assistance, the New Indian Express reported.

But despite his pleas, no one lent a hand out of fears of contracting the disease, which has been ravaging the country, according to the outlet.

Drivers were seen ignoring the struggling man as his wife’s body lay on the road.

The couple used to live near a railroad station, where they begged for a living before Nagalaxmi became ill. The railway police gave Swami money to perform the final rites.

In a separate incident, a 70-year-old man carried the body of his wife, who also died of the illness, on his bicycle for cremation in the village of Ambarpur, the Indian Express reported.

Police said she died Monday at the district hospital and her body was sent to his village in an ambulance.

“But the villagers including the elders refused to help him perform the last rites, fearing they might also contract the virus,” police official Madiahun Munna Lal Dhusia told the Press Trust of India.

“After no one came to help, the old man decided to keep his wife’s body on his cycle and go for her cremation. However, it was not possible for him to carry the body on a cycle and he kept losing his balance,” he said.

When police learned about his plight, they helped the man transport the body to Ramghat, where the cremation was performed.
