DOUGLAS, Ariz. — One landscaper is dead and another critically injured after a swarm of 800,000 Africanized bees in an attic attacked them in southern Arizona.
Four workers were outside the home when the swarm descended from a hive in the attic about 10:30 a.m Wednesday. One of the landscapers went into cardiac arrest after he was stung more than 100 times, and later died at the hospital.
“This is the first time we have recorded a death in our community from bees,” Douglas Fire Chief Mario Novoa told CNN.
Firefighters discovered an enormous 3-by-8-foot hive inside the attic. Tuscan News Now reports that the local exterminator, who had to cut through the home’s roof to reach the hive, believes it had been growing for 10 years.
Novoa said the nest filled a 55-gallon drum, according to USA Today.
The exterminator, along with a neighbor and one firefighter, also suffered bee stings.
The 90-year-old homeowner was not injured.
