A 28-year-old Australian man died in his wife’s arms after a freak rock-climbing accident in the Canadian Rockies.

Adelaide residents Daniel Heritage and his wife, Emma, were two months into their two-year overseas adventure when tragedy struck on Wednesday in Calgary, news.com.au reported.

Emma, who witnessed Daniel take the fatal fall, penned a heartbreaking letter on Facebook in tribute to her late husband, according to The Advertiser.

“You were my best friend, love of my life and adventure buddy,” she wrote in the touching love letter.

“Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life and helping me realize that I was more capable than I think. Thank you for inviting me into your world where anything was possible and each day was an opportunity for a new adventure,” the grief-stricken wife wrote.

“My heart longs for you and I’d do anything to be slow dancing to our wedding song, joking around together, exploring the world or sitting in silence reading books/movies together,” she continued.

“Whilst I am upset about no longer having the opportunity to grow old together, I feel privileged to have known you,” Emma wrote.

“You were the best husband I could have ever asked for and whilst I don’t know what the future looks like for me at the moment, I do know that you had a great last few months,” she wrote.

“You were dearly loved by so many people who had just met you and those lucky enough to have known you for many years. I love you now and forever,” she added, ending with: “Your wife, Emma.”

The couple, who had recently celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary, had posted messages about their trip on social media.

Before embarking on the adventure, Daniel, an engineer, wrote on LinkedIn that he wanted to “pursue hobbies and passion projects that [he hadn’t] previously had the opportunity to,” according to news.com.au.

“This includes rock climbing in the Canadian Rockies, becoming a more proficient skier, building on my photography skills, and by the end of this trip I aim to have lead-climbed a frozen waterfall,” he wrote.

Emma’s twin sister, Jessica Bartel, launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the funeral costs.

“The death was very traumatic for Emma as she witnessed the accident and held him in her arms as he passed,” Bartel wrote.

“As Emma is still in Canada (currently staying with friends she met on her travels), we desperately desire to send up a family member from Australia to be with her to support her in her grief and to help bring her and her husband home,” she wrote.

“We would greatly appreciate any support to help ease the financial costs associated with travelling so suddenly and to support the families with funeral costs and other expenses,” Bartel wrote.

The sister told The Advertiser that Daniel “felt like my brother way before they got married.”

She added: “One thing I loved most about him was the way he cared for others. You always felt heard by him.”

Daniel’s older sister Brianna also paid tribute to him.

“Even though you were younger you were always the one that looked out for me,” she said, according to The Advertiser.

“When I was sad you would let me crawl into your bed. When I was down you would always know the right thing to say. You’re still the person I come to for advice,” she wrote.

And younger sis terRebecca Heritage remembered Daniel as a man with the “kindest heart, most infectious smile and strongest morals” who was “living his best life in Canada”.

“You were the best big brother I could have ever asked for,” Rebecca said, according to the news outlet.

“Now who’s going to cyber stalk any new potential man in my life and give me their entire personal/professional background in the space of 5 minutes?” she said.

“He had so many goals and he was the type of person that fulfilled his dreams and lived life to the fullest,” the sister added. “He loved his wife Emma so much, I never saw him as happy as he was when he was with her.”
