A man accidentally shot and killed his own daughter in their home early Sunday — after mistaking her for an intruder, according to reports.

Nadeja Jermainequa Pressley, 23, was pronounced dead at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, where her father opened fire around 1:15 a.m., striking her through a door, WYFF 4 reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed the dad, who wasn’t identified, believed Pressley was trying to break in, said Lt. Jimmy Bolt of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

“I just heard two gunshots,” neighbor Regina Harvey told the station. “[I] went out on the porch and I seen police everywhere, everywhere. That’s just a sad feeling.”

Melvin Grover, a member of nearby St. Luke Holiness Church, told WYFF, “It’s a sad day today, and it’s a tragic moment that happened in the neighborhood, and we are so heartbroken about it.”

The shooting remains under investigation by the sheriff’s Violent Crimes Unit, according to the Greenville News.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
