Six people, including five children, were shot dead overnight at a home in Oklahoma, police said.
Cops responded to an east Muskogee residence at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on a report of multiple people shot and spotted an armed suspect, firing one round at the man, police said.
The bullet missed the suspect, but he was taken into custody after a brief chase. He was not immediately identified by investigators and his connection to the victims has not yet been released, KOTV reported.
Officers then found four children and a man dead inside the home. A fifth child was later pronounced dead while being airlifted to a hospital in Tulsa, KJRH reported.
A woman inside the house was also taken to a Tulsa hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
A Muskogee police spokeswoman characterized the young victims as “small children,” but could not provide their exact ages. A motive in the shooting is unknown, but investigators don’t think anyone else is involved, she said.
“We don’t believe that it’s random but we just don’t have details yet of the why or what happened,” Officer Lynn Hamlin said.
Several messages seeking additional details from Muskogee police, including the name of the suspect, were not returned Tuesday.
