A man who poisoned baby food on supermarket shelves in Germany has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison for attempted murder and attempted extortion, according to reports.

The 54-year-old man, whose identity was not released, admitted to placing five contaminated jars of food at supermarkets in the city of Friedrichshafen in an attempt to blackmail retailers and get them to pay him $13.5 million to identify the items, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported.

The tainted jars of food contained enough ethylene glycol — a chemical found in antifreeze — to be fatal if consumed by a child, prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Peter Vobiller said at a district court in the southern German town of Ravensburg on Monday that the fact that no child had been poisoned was thanks to hard police work and “a goodly portion of luck, to be honest,” according to the news outlet.

The defendant previously claimed to be diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder and that he consumed large amounts of alcohol and painkillers at the time of the crime, but was declared responsible for his actions by a psychiatrist, Deutchse Welle reported.

The man’s lawyer conceded to the extortion charge, but rejected the guilty verdict for attempted murder.

The defendant has a week to appeal the verdict.
