A man was killed by a falling tree as Category 4 Hurricane Michael tore through the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, the first reported death caused by the storm.

The victim became trapped inside his Gadsden County, Florida home when a tree crashed through the roof and trapped him, according to the local sheriff’s department.

Emergency crews attempted to make it to the man’s home, but could not immediately reach it due to downed power lines and blocked roads.

The victim’s name was not released.

Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with winds speeds of 155 mph.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said on Tuesday that search and rescue teams are heading into the state’s hardest-hit areas to help survivors.
