A California man was struck and killed by his own van while trying to stop a thief from stealing it, according to a disturbing report.

Jose DeJesus Berrelleza, 33, heard a suspicious sound in the driveway of his Anaheim home at around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, so he went outside to investigate, according to the Los Angeles Times.

He found a crook trying to make off with his work van and confronted the suspect — who hopped into the vehicle, hit the gas and slammed into Berrelleza, according to the paper.

As the suspect fled in the van, Berrelleza died at the scene as a result of his injuries, police said.

The vehicle was recovered and “multiple subjects have been detained” in connection to the tragic fatality — but no arrests have been made as of Wednesday, according to the Anaheim Police Department.

Police believe Berrelleza didn’t know the thief.
