A Pennsylvania man handcuffed his wife inside his car on several occasions while he went to work to assuage his concerns that she was being unfaithful to him, police said.
John Adam VanHorn, 49, of Albrightsville, was charged Monday with false imprisonment following his arrest on Jan. 23, when police in Bethelem responded to the 900 block of Jennings Street to investigate a report of a woman handcuffed inside a parked car, the Allentown Morning Call reports.
Officers then found a woman with a metal device shackled to her ankle. The metal component was secured to the underside of the vehicle’s front passenger seat, police said.
The unidentified woman told responding cops her husband had left her inside the car. Police later tracked down VanHorn driving nearby in another vehicle that he borrowed and officers found him in possession of the keys to his wife’s shackles and two “realistic looking” BB guns, police said.
VanHorn said he left his wife bound inside his car “numerous times” within the past six months while he went to work, telling cops he was worried she was being unfaithful.
It’s unclear how many times VanHorn kept his wife against her will, but co-workers said it was “common” to see the woman inside the vehicle. They were unaware, however, that VanHorn’s wife was unable to leave, police said.
The woman told police she had been married to VanHorn for 20 years, according to a criminal complaint obtained by WPMT.
VanHorn, who has been released from custody after posting bail, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
