A Florida man shot and killed his wife whom he claims he mistook for an intruder inside their home, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when the unidentified man said he heard a noise outside the bedroom door in Stuart, according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
The man told detectives he wasn’t aware that his wife wasn’t in the room and went to investigate with a handgun, Snyder said.
“[He] saw a shape in the hallway and fired one round and unfortunately, it turned out to be his wife,” Snyder said.
His wife, who was six months pregnant, was brought to the hospital, news station WPBF reported. She was pronounced dead, but doctors were able to save the baby.
“This is a nightmare case,” said Snyder. “You know, somebody who thinks he’s defending his home, actually shoots his wife.”
The sheriff’s office declined to release the names of the couple.
Snyder said that from what they know, the couple had a good relationship and there had never been any calls to the home for domestic violence or other problems.
He said they are still investigating the incident as a suspicious death.
“So, though we do have a good statement from him, we don’t take anything to face value and we’ll continue investigating through all backgrounds. There’s a lot of investigative steps that we’ll have to make sure that he’s telling the truth,” said Snyder.
