An American Airlines passenger was briefly taken into custody in Philadelphia early Thursday for making “alarming statements” on a flight, police and airline officials said.
Police initially said the man, who was not immediately identified, tried to break into the cockpit area while aboard American Airlines Flight 2392 en route from Orlando to Philadelphia International Airport at about 9:20 a.m.
But investigators later determined the passenger never tried to bust into the cockpit, police confirmed.
“The subject allegedly told one of the flight attendants that he wanted to speak with the pilot upon approach, approximately 80 miles out of [Philadelphia] – and then subsequently ran back to his seat,” police said in a statement obtained by The Post.
A male flight attendant and a male passenger then sat with the man until the plane landed without incident, police said.
“At no point did the subject attempt to leave his seat for the duration of the flight,” the statement continued.
The passenger, who is not facing local or federal charges, was taken to a hospital for observation, police said.
No weapons were recovered and no injuries were reported.
An American Airlines spokesman said in a statement to The Post that the flight crew noticed the man “exhibiting erratic behavior” and “making alarming statements” while on approach into Philadelphia.
“The cabin crew took precautionary measures and monitored the customer who remained seated for the remainder of the flight,” the airline said. “Upon arrival at the gate, Philadelphia police met the aircraft and placed the individual in custody.”
The passenger did not actively attempt to breach the cockpit door, airline officials said.
