A man wearing a MAGA hat slashed another man with a sword during a fight outside of a San Francisco roller-skating rink, authorities said.
The hat-wearing suspect got into an argument with the victim outside the Church of 8 Wheels, a popular skating rink in the Western Addition neighborhood, on Friday night, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
When the victim tried to snatch the hat off his head, the suspect swung the sword and sliced him on the hand, according to the report.
“We are still investigating what led up to the assault with the sword or edged weapon,” Robert Rueca, a police spokesman, told the newspaper on Sunday.
“We know the suspect was wearing the hat. During the incident the hat came off of the suspect. The suspect and the weapon remain outstanding.”
A man walking out of a liquor store across the street about half an hour before the attack told the Chronicle that the suspect ran up to him and shouted homophobic slurs.
Scott Sweeney, 24, told the newspaper he didn’t believe the sword was real when he first saw it tucked away in a sheath on the suspect’s back.
“In my mind I didn’t think it was a real sword until we came out later and police were on the scene and there was blood and the hat on ground,” Sweeney said.
