COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — A 48-year-old man accused of domestic assault has been arrested after authorities say he bit one police officer and spit blood into the face of another.

The suspect was arrested Saturday on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, disarming a police officer, interference with official acts and serious domestic assault.

Police say officers responded to a report of disturbance at a home Saturday night. A Council Bluffs Police Department spokesman said the suspect refused to exit the house and was holding a small chain saw.

Officers said the man rammed his head into the door repeatedly, knocking himself unconscious. Police said that as they were trying to restrain him, he bit one officer in the left calf and spit blood in the face of another officer.

The officer who was bitten was treated at Mercy Hospital and returned to duty.
