A man who caught on fire when he ran straight into the towering inferno at Burning Man died from his injuries Sunday.

The unidentified party-goer was chased by firefighters as he entered the bonfire in Black Rock City, Nevada, around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

But he could not be caught before entering the structure and becoming engulfed in flames.

A statement from the Burning Man festival’s website said the person was airlifted to a hospital burn center. He later died there.

It was not clear why the man had jumped into the conflagration.

More than 70,000 people attend the Burning Man festival every year.
