A federal judge on Tuesday gave former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort until Friday to respond to allegations by special counsel Robert Mueller that he and an associate “repeatedly” contacted two witnesses to influence their testimony in Manafort’s criminal case.
Washington, DC, Judge Amy Berman Jackson also set a hearing for next week on Mueller’s request that Manafort’s bail be revoked.
Manafort faces charges of money-laundering conspiracy, false statements and acting as an unregistered agent for Ukrainian interests.
He and the associate tried to get the witnesses to lie about the nature of lobbying and public-relations work they carried out on behalf of Ukraine, prosecutors allege.
Court documents call the associate “Person A,” which in earlier filings has referred to Konstantin Kilimnik, who prosecutors have said has ties to Russian intelligence.
Manafort’s spokesman, Jason Maloni, said, “Mr. Manafort is innocent and nothing about this latest allegation changes our defense. We will do our talking in court.”
