A manhunt is underway in Texas for an “armed and dangerous” suspect in the shooting of a state trooper.

The incident happened after Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Chad Walker pulled up behind a disabled motorist at about 7:45 p.m. Friday near Mexia, which is south of Dallas, according to a Facebook post by theTexas Department of Public Safety Officers Association.

Before Walker even stopped his patrol car, the driver of the disabled vehicle got out with a handgun and “fired multiple rounds at Trooper Walker through the patrol unit’s windshield,” the post says.

Walker was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head and abdomen. The suspect, 36-year-old DeArthur Pinson Jr., returned to his car, grabbed a backpack and ran, according the Public Safety Officers Association.

Walker, described as being in stable but critical condition, is married with a 15-year-old son, twin 7-year-old daughters, and a 2-month-old daughter, the association said.
