A Marine deserter suspected of killing his mother’s boyfriend inside the family’s Virginia home earlier this month was captured Wednesday at the scene of the crime.

Michael Alexander Brown, 22, who in October deserted his North Carolina post, had been on the lam and considered “armed and dangerous” since allegedly shooting to death Rodney Wilfred Brown, 54, on Nov. 10.

He was taken into custody “without incident” in “fine” condition at his mother’s Hardy, North Carolina, home, and charged with murder, according to Sheriff W. Q. “Bill” Overton Jr.

Brown’s mother told investigators she witnessed her son commit the crime. The motive is unclear.

Over the past several weeks, Brown was believed to have used at least two getaway vehicles. One that his mother identified was found abandoned in South Carolina an hour outside the marine’s deserted base, Camp Lejeune.

Authorities believe Brown later used an RV to get to Roanoke, Virginia, to try to contact his grandmother. Police located the camper, but Brown was nowhere to be found.

The sheriff said authorities looking into whether anyone assisted Brown while he was on the run.
