Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the state into lockdown Monday as the number of coronavirus cases topped 1,400.

The stay-at-home order, which will go into effect at 8 p.m., would prevent anyone from going out for anything other than essential work, to get food or necessary medical attention and “other necessary purposes.”

“This is a deadly public health crisis,” Hogan said Monday. “We are no longer asking or suggesting that Marylanders stay home. We are directing them to do so.”

He added that no one should travel outside the state or use public transportation unless it is “absolutely necessary.”

Anyone who has been outside the region should quarantine for 14 days, Hogan said.

“Every single Marylander can be a hero just by staying home and practicing social distancing,” he said.
