At least 35 inmates died from overdoses after they stormed the infirmary in a Venezuelan prison and gobbled up all the medication, officials said Friday.

More than 100 others were being treated, with about 20 in serious condition, the BBC reported.

The inmates were protesting jail conditions earlier this week when they ran wild and ate fatal combinations of anti-seizure drugs, insulin and antibiotics.

The national guard was called in to restore order while prisoner advocates and relatives accused the prison warden of poisoning the inmates.
