A masked gunman opened fire in a German movie theater Thursday, taking hostages before he was killed by police.

Remarkably, no one was seriously injured by the attacker, who stormed the Kinoplex cinema in the town of Viernheim, near Frankfurt, at around 3 p.m with an ammunition belt slung around his shoulder. He fired four shots as he entered the theater complex, then barricaded himself inside.

“He surprised us in the toilets,” 16-year-old Almir H told German newspaper Bild. “He spoke broken German. He said, ‘Come out if you value your lives.’ There were about 17 of us hostages.”

The manager called authorities as screaming people fled the theater.

“There was a threat situation and the man was then shot dead by one of our officers,” Christiane Kobus, a police spokesman, said.

Authorities said the attack doesn’t appear to have any ties to terrorism.
