Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s purported “revenge tour” is heading for its last stop Tuesday evening as firebrand Rep. Matt Gaetz faces a primary challenge backed by the former speaker’s allies.
Gaetz (R-Fla.) is heavily favored to win Tuesday night’s race against Navy veteran Aaron Dimmock in Florida’s ruby red 1st Congressional District, which has prompted McCarthy loyalists to set their sights on scuttling any future efforts by the 42-year-old to vie for higher office, such as the Sunshine State’s 2026 governor’s race.
“Kevin spent $3 million and all he has to show for it is a memo and a stack of canceled checks. We hope he continues listening to those who told him Aaron Dimmock was viable,” Gaetz said in a statement to The Post.

The Freedom Patriots PAC, a group widely seen as aligned with McCarthy, has shelled out $3 million to take down Gaetz.
This includes a series of attack ads predicated on allegations of Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct as well as his past kinship with ex-Florida tax collector Joel Greenberg, who was sentenced to 11 years behind bars for sex trafficking, among other crimes.
Gaetz has long denied the allegations against him and cited the Justice Department’s decision against bringing charges as vindication. The House Ethics Committee confirmed in June that it reopened a probe into accusations of sexual misconduct and drug abuse against the Florida firebrand.
Given that Gaetz has a high probability of prevailing in Tuesday’s election, the Freedom Patriots PAC is looking ahead to the 42-year-old’s future political ambitions.

The Freedom Patriots PAC recently found in a poll it commissioned that Gaetz would be in third place for a hypothetical Florida GOP gubernatorial primary with 14% support, lagging Attorney General Ashley Moody at 17%, and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) at 23%, according to a memo obtained by ABC News.
That same survey, which was taken last month, also pegged Gaetz with the highest unfavorability rating of the trio.
“The advertising against Gaetz in his own district has clearly damaged his ability to win a Governor’s race,” the memo said, per ABC News.
The Post contacted a representative for the Freedom Patriots PAC for comment.
The group has drawn cash from the America Fund, part of a constellation of groups working to take down Republicans who revolted against McCarthy.

McCarthy fumed against Gaetz in response and alleged that the mutiny was motivated by his refusal to intervene in an ethics probe against the Floridian — which the four-term congressman denied.
Gaetz is the last of the eight GOP rabble-rousers to be up for a primary this cycle. So far, only one of them — Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-Va.) has lost his primary.
In contrast to Good, Gaetz has courted close relations with former President Donald Trump.
Two others — Reps. Ken Buck (R-Col.) and Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) — opted against running for reelection.
Gaetz was first elected to the lower chamber in 2016.
Throughout his primary challenge, the incumbent congressman has run ads touting his ties to Trump and ripping Dimmock over his past in diversity training.
Dimmock, in turn, has focused his counterattacks on the allegations against Gaetz.
