The body of Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law has been released from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, just days after she plunged to her death from a California parking garage.

Carrie Romney’s remains were picked up from the county office sometime in the last few days, and have likely been taken to a funeral home for burial, according to the medical examiner’s office.

It’s unclear who collected or authorized the collection of the 64-year-old’s body, but it was either her legal next-of-kin or a family member she authorized to handle her remains before her death.

Carrie Romney, 64, married George Scott Romney, 81, in 2016. They were in the process of getting divorced this year.

Ordinarily, her husband, George Scott Romney, would likely be the next-of-kin responsible for collecting remains, but the pair were in the middle of an ugly divorce.

Carrie was months into the process of divorcing the 81-year-old older brother of the former GOP presidential candidate in what court documents suggest may have been a contentious separation.

Her body was found at the base of a Valencia parking garage on Friday night after apparently falling.

Officials have not commented on whether the death was a suicide or an accident. The official cause of death in the medical examiner’s records remains listed as “Deferred” days after her Oct. 10 fatality.

That means the cause of death is still “pending additional investigation,” according to the county.

The examination of Carrie’s body was completed on Oct. 11, a day after her death, but the results may not be available for upwards of three months, the Medical Examiner’s Office told The Post.

Carrie had been separated from her husband of eight years since May. Romney had filed for divorce in early June over “irreconcilable differences.”

Exactly what those differences were remains unclear, but Romney sought in his filing to block the courts from awarding his estranged wife any assets, indicated that they shared no property that needed dividing, and also claimed the couple had decided to arbitrate spousal support between each other.

But Carrie filed her own papers indicating the opposite — she requested alimony, asked that Romney be made to cover legal fees, and sought to block the court from awarding him any support from her instead.

The couple reportedly lived together at a $725,000 Valencia condo, though it remains unclear who owned it. The couple had been dating since at least 2012, and were married in 2016.

Ordinarily, Romney would likely be the next-of-kin responsible for collecting remains, though whether he would in the midst of a divorce is unclear.

Carrie also has at least two adult sons from a previous marriage, and at least one sister.
