Meghan Markle was aggressively confronted by a heckler in New York City who pestered her about being “part of two broken families” Tuesday night — hours before she, Prince Harry and her mother claim they were caught in a “near catastrophic” two-hour paparazzi car chase.
While stepping out of a blacked-out SUV at the Ziegfeld Theater, where Markle, 41, was about to be honored by Gloria Steinham at the Women of Vision Awards, the heckler cruelly called out: “Meghan, how do you feel being part of two broken families?”
Meghan Markle was heckled when she arrived at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. GC ImagesThe “Suits” actress, whose parents have been divorced since she was 6, kept her composure as she walked into the venue wearing a flashy gold Johanna Ortiz cocktail dress.
She and her father, Thomas Markle, have been estranged ever since he was busted for allegedly collaborating with paparazzi to stage photos that showed him being measured for a suit for her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, 38.
The callous commentary did not seem to faze the Duchess of Sussex, who was awarded the Women of Vision award in honor of “her global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls.”
In her speech, Markle told the audience, “You can be the visionary of your own life.”
“You can charter a path in which what you repeat in your daily acts of service, in kindness, in advocacy, in grace and in fairness, that those become the very things that are recognized by the next wave of women, both young and old, who will also choose this moment to join the movement and make our vision for an equitable world reality,” she said.
While making her speech, Meghan “became emotional,” according to the Sun, which reported that audience members said they found her words “authentic.”
“Meghan was very gracious and beyond articulate. She was quite wonderful,” fellow attendee Paul Didonato said.
Another guest told the publication that Harry and Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, looked “unbelievably proud” during Meghan’s big moment.
The Duchess of Sussex is the 35th female leader to receive the accolade, which has previously been awarded to Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, filmmaker Ava DuVernay and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen.
The run-in with the vicious commentator came hours before Meghan, Prince Harry and Ragland were pursued by photographers after leaving the event.
The trio left the event in an SUV around 10 p.m. and were chased by “highly aggressive paparazzi” for over two hours, a spokesperson for the couple said earlier Wednesday.
A source told Page Six that the incident narrowly avoided turning into a fatal disaster when one cameraperson hit a car, while another almost ran over an NYPD officer.
“Meghan, how do you feel being part of two broken families?” the heckler shouted. GC ImagesThe dramatic night came just a week after Harry’s quick visit to the UK for his father’s coronation.
Prince Harry arrived in London on Friday afternoon and left just over 24 hours later, well before the celebrations had concluded, while his wife stayed home with their two young children, Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 1.
