The North Carolina dad who allegedly rammed his car into a restaurant, killing two relatives, was battling mental illness leading up to the terrifying episode, according to reports.
Roger Self, 62, intentionally plowed his vehicle Sunday afternoon into the Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City, where his family was enjoying lunch, The Charlotte Observer reported.
His daughter, Katelyn, and daughter-in-law, Amanda, were both fatally mowed down at the restaurant. Self’s wife, Diane, and son, Josh, were sent to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Self was in attendance at the meal organized by his now slain daughter when he left the table — only to return in his Jeep, according to the newspaper.
Family members were stunned by the alleged double homicide, saying that the dad “deeply loved” both women who were killed, according to his pastor.
“There’s nobody in the world Roger loved more than those people and they know that,” Venture Church pastor Austin Rammell told news station WSOC.
Self had been suffering from increasingly more severe mental health issues, the pastor said, including anxiety and mental breakdowns.
“This was not a conscious act by their father and they know that,” Rammel said.
The father had reportedly sought help before the fatal car crash.
“His family and close friends have intensely labored to try and get Roger help,” Rammel said, according to the Charlotte Observer. “At the end of the day, we were all unable to help our friend.”
Self was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. A judge ordered him Monday held without bail.
