A New York Police Department report says nearly 1 in 6 undercover officers have been mistaken for suspects by fellow officers — and came face-to-face with a loaded gun.
The report comes after an off-duty officer in plainclothes was killed by another officer who mistook him for a criminal. Gov. David Paterson ordered the report after the May 28 incident.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly detailed the information in a plan to avoid such shootings.
Incidents where undercover officers are actually fired on and killed are very rare.
