Ten people have been arrested after blocking Manhattan traffic to protest the detention of a Haitian man facing deportation decades after his drug conviction.
Dozens of people gathered outside a federal building Tuesday to voice their support for Jean Montrevil. The married father of four served more than 10 years for a 1989 conviction.
His wife and his pastor said Montrevil has paid his debt to society, has become a community leader and is the sole family provider.
The New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City said Montrevil has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials since Dec. 30. A call to the agency wasn’t immediately returned.
Those arrested stood blocking traffic for more than a half hour. Police offered them the opportunity to disperse before arresting them.
