Ten children were hospitalized — one with a partial toe amputation — in a possible escalator malfunction Thursday afternoon at Stuyvesant High School in Lower Manhattan, officials said.

The incident happened around 3:45 p.m, sending emergency responders racing to the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether a mechanical malfunction or overcrowding was to blame, said FDNY officials at the scene.

Ten people were taken to various area hospitals, including one teen boy who lost part of his big toe, officials said.

“I just [saw] this kid lying down at the bottom of the escalator. You [could] see flesh and bone,” said horrified witness Kamran Chowdhury, 14. “There was blood everywhere.”

“He was screaming because of the pain,” said the spooked freshman. “I’m not taking the escalator anymore. I’m taking the stairs.”

None of the injuries appears life-threatening, according to the FDNY.
