The kid knifed the girl, then took off into the upscale Mountain View area with police in hot pursuit. They eventually caught him with the help of home surveillance footage and a K-9 unit.

The boy allegedly used a kitchen knife that was recovered on the Bubb Elementary School playground, where the stabbing took place on March 11, according to the police.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown.

The Mountain View Fire Department treated the young victim at the scene before releasing her to a parent. The boy was detained at his house without incident. He has no connection to the elementary school and its unclear if the two children knew each other.

The 10-year-old was transferred to doctors at the juvenile mental health services provider. The 7-year-old girl is recovering, according to the Mountain View Whisman School District.

“We’re very grateful the student is expected to be okay. The safety of our students is always our top priority,” the district said.

Neighbors told KTVU they were stunned that a 10-year-old allegedly carried out the attack.

“A 10-year-old with a knife attacking someone? I can’t even fathom how that could happen,” said Lori Parsons.
