A 10th child has died as a result of the severe viral outbreak that has recently swept a New Jersey rehabilitation center, officials said.

Like the others, the child, who was staying at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, was infected with adenovirus, the state’s health department confirmed in a statement Wednesday night.

“The loss of these young lives is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with the families who are affected,” Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in the statement. “We are working closely with the facility to conduct respiratory illness surveillance and ensure all infection control protocols are continuously followed. We are also engaging in discussions with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on standards for these facilities.”

The most recent victim became ill before Oct. 22, officials said. Symptoms — including the common cold, sore throat, bronchitis, diarrhea, pink eye and fever — usually appear two to 14 days after a child is exposed to the virus.

To date, 27 children have been infected with adenovirus at the center, officials said.

In an inspection report released Tuesday, the Health Department revealed some hygiene and infection control deficiencies at the center.

And last week, a worker offered NJ.com a disturbing glimpse into the “filthy,” bug-infested conditions at the facility.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” the worker told the outlet. “The facility is filthy….[There would be] bees sometimes coming in the patients’ rooms.”

Meanwhile, a second outbreak, confirmed to be a milder form of adenovirus — has infected four children at the Voorhees Pediatric Center in Camden County, officials said.

In both cases, the children have not been identified because of privacy concerns, but most are under age 18 and have extremely fragile immune systems.
