A gun-toting thug who was wounded by cops in 2009 during a brazen nap-time robbery attempt at a Brooklyn day-care center secretly operating as a drug den was sentenced to 14 years behind bars today.
Bandit Gavin Nugent, 36, had previously been found guilty of first-degree burglary for his role in the June 2009 incident that left children screaming in fear at the Special Moments Daycare center on East 52nd Street in East Flatbush.
Nugent, a Jamaica native, faces deportation when released. He was mum in Brooklyn Supreme Court today, dressed like he was attending his own funeral in black pants, a black shirt and a black-and-white striped tie.
Regarding the sentencing, his lawyer Philip Smallman later said the “verdict was supported by the evidence and the judge gave him what he thought was a fair sentencing.”
Showing no concern for the toddlers, Nugent aimed his 9mm weapon at officers, authorities said. He was shot three times, and survived.
Cops would later find 10 pounds of marijuana and $103,000 in cash in the center’s basement.
Nugent’s two other cohorts were also arrested. Dwayne Jackson, who burst in to the center with Nugent and pushed its owner to the ground, was previously sentenced to 12 years to life after pleading guilty to second-degree burglary.
Carl Grierson, 41, a k a Kendrick Baker, skipped bail while facing burglary charges, officials said.
The center’s owner, Diane Rogers, and her husband, Sherwin Rogers, were arrested on drug charges.
