A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot during a fight on the subway in Queens on Friday afternoon in the latest act of city transit violence, police said.
The fatal feud erupted between two groups of “young individuals” aboard a southbound A train in Far Rockaway around 3:45 p.m., according to the police.
What began as a verbal dispute quickly turned violent with a gunshot striking Jayjon Burnett in the chest, Transit Chief Jason Wilcox told reporters Friday night.
A good Samaritan pulled Burnett off the train after it arrived at the Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. station. He was taken to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
It remains unclear what sparked the altercation. Wilcox said the fight was believed to have started as the train was near the Beach 36th Street Station.
No arrests have been made in the incident, cops said.
“We’re going to ask for the public’s assistance tonight with this,” Wilcox said.“There were numerous people on that train that may have seen or heard what transpired.”
MTA President Richard Davey added: “By all accounts, this was not random. We offer our condolences in this tragic crime that occurred here today.”
Wilcox said no police officers were in the subway car at the time of the shooting, even as Mayor Eric Adams’ “subway safety plan” introduced in January has flooded the transit system with more than 1,000 extra cops per day in an effort to reduce crime underground.
After 10 months of the initiative, major crime on the subways is up 42% so far this year compared to the same time period in 2021, including eight murders, NYPD and MTA data shows.
