HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — Nineteen beaches have been closed to bathing in New York’s Nassau County due to bacteria-laden runoff from Sunday’s rainstorm.
Health officials also issued advisories against swimming at 66 Suffolk County beaches, mainly in harbor areas along the north shore.
Newsday reports that the beach closures and the advisories will remain in effect for roughly two tidal cycles, or about 24 hours after the last rainfall. They are aimed at beaches that have significant runoff after a heavy rain.
Nassau County got more than 10 inches of rain in some area.
Beaches along the Atlantic and the Peconic Estuary are not affected.
