HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. — Prosecutors on eastern Long Island are announcing the indictment of two suspects accused of targeting Hispanic victims for robbery.
A 30-count indictment was to be unsealed Tuesday in a Riverhead, N.Y., courtroom. The suspects were not immediately identified.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says the charges are the result of a four-month investigation.
He says the pair targeted Hispanics for robbery because they believed the victims carried a lot of cash. The victims were also targeted because they did not speak English and were perceived unlikely to report the robberies to police. A BB-gun was used in most of the holdups.
The charges come a day after a Long Island teenager was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime in the 2008 death of an Ecuadorean immigrant.
