Two police officers were wounded — and a suspect killed — during a drug raid at a seedy Westchester motel, according to authorities and a local report.
The pair — a Greenburgh police sergeant and a Dobbs Ferry officer — were part of a team taking part in the Monday night sting at the Ardsley Acres Hotel Court on Saw Mill River Road, according to police and the Journal News.
“As the officers approached the motel, a suspect came out of the room and engaged the officers in gunfire,” Ardsley Police Chief Anthony Piccolino said in an evening press conference.
“Multiple shots were exchanged between the officers and the suspect. The suspect was struck and he is deceased at this time. Two officers were also struck. They were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.”
The deceased suspect has been identified as Samuel Galberth, 42, of West Haven, the Westchester County DA’s office said in a statement.
A second man, who was with Galberth at the motel, was arrested on an interstate warrant for bank robbery, the DA’s office said. It did not identify the second man.
Police requested that the FBI take over the case.
“We’re not looking for anybody,” Piccolino said. “This was contained. The scene is safe. The village is safe.”
G.N.Miller/NYPostIt wasn’t immediately clear whose bullets struck the officers.
This is the first time officers have been shot in Ardsley, Piccolino said.
One guest at the motel told the Journal News he heard hundreds of gunshots.
“I’m from Brooklyn,” Anthony Passananti told the outlet. “We’re used to some of this, but not like this.”
“This doesn’t happen up here,” he added. “This was a nightmare.”
