Two people died and three are critically injured after a fast-moving car crashed into a tree on a Long Island road.

State police say westbound lanes on the Southern State Parkway near North Merrick were closed after the accident just before dawn Sunday.

Police did not immediately release the identities or gender of the victims.

The car apparently ran off the road while speeding.
