CANASTOTA, N.Y. — A 2-year-old girl remains hospitalized after being pulled from a section of the old Erie Canal she had fallen into along with a 4-year-old girl.

Police in Canastota say the girls wandered out of a house where they were under the care of an aunt and uncle Tuesday afternoon. Authorities say the girls tumbled into 3 feet of water in a stretch of the waterway 20 miles east of Syracuse.

Police say the 4-year old was able to get out and go for help. The aunt and uncle found the 2-year-old and pulled her from the water.

Police say the girl was unconscious but breathing when she taken to Oneida City Hospital. She was later transported to University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was listed in fair condition.
