City officials have identified 20 public middle schools whose sixth graders won’t be hearing the dismissal bell until 6 p.m. come the fall.
The schools — six each in The Bronx and Brooklyn, five in Queens and three in Manhattan — are participating in a pilot program that extends the school day by 2.5 hours.
A total of 2,000 students will receive the extra schooling and intensive literacy help for the entire school year beginning in September.
The program, a joint Department of Education and City Council production, is expected to cost $19 million over three years.
Non-profits such as Robin Hood Foundation and other private firms are contributing part of the funding.
