A man convicted of stabbing a New York City cop who tried to issue him a summons for smoking on a subway platform has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Hugo Hernandez pleaded guilty Jan. 5 to aggravated assault on a police officer. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said his sentencing Tuesday was part of a plea deal.
Transit Detective Angel Cruz was stabbed in the head with a large hunting knife when he tried to give the summons to Hernandez. Cruz fired at Hernandez and struck him in the ankle.
Cruz made a full recovery after eight months of therapy.
