Two young girls were killed and two adults critically injured in a massive fire at a building in New Jersey on Monday night, according to a report.
The five-alarm blaze erupted at about 6 p.m. at a three-story building on Elizabeth Avenue in the city of Elizabeth, a city spokeswoman told NJ.com.
Police efforts to rescue the children, estimated to be 7 and 11 years old, were hampered by window bars, the report said.
The adults, a man and woman, were hospitalized.
Footage from the inferno, which took about two hours to extinguish, showed smoke coming from one of the lower floors.
The building that ignited is a mixed-use property, with commercial space on the first floor and residential apartments above.
