ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Authorities are trying to determine if three saw blades found on a Rochester street were used by two inmates who escaped from the Monroe County Jail last week.

Sheriff’s department officials tell the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester that the saw blades were found last Friday morning in the grass on a street near the jail 34-year-old Joseph Lee Mitchell and 35-year-old Eddie Palmer escaped from last Thursday night.

Authorities say the two men cut through a metal bar in their cell window, then smashed the window and dropped about a dozen feet to the ground. They were seen on surveillance tapes running away from the jail.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy spotted the two men running across a street and alerted jail officials.

Mitchell and Palmer remain at large.
