3,500 K-kids get gift
The number of kids qualifying for accelerated public kindergarten programs jumped by 10 percent this year compared to last year — despite a huge drop in the number of applicants, new data show.
More than 3,500 incoming kindergarten students scored 90 percent or above on two entrance exams for gifted and talented classes — up 311 kids compared to last year.
But as in prior years since the city introduced a uniform application for the advanced classes in 2007, the number of kids qualifying by district varied widely.
Wealthier neighborhoods like Manhattan’s districts 2 and 3 had over 1,100 kids combined land gifted and talented seats — while districts in the South Bronx and Bushwick totaled 18 qualifying students between them.
