A popular Queens Catholic high school girls’ basketball coach and school administrator has died from the coronavirus, the school announced.

Joseph Lewinger, 42, who spent 20 years at the Mary Louis Academy, a private girls school in Jamaica Estates, died Saturday as a result of complications from the deadly virus, the school’s principal said in a Twitter post on Saturday.

“He tirelessly served The Mary Louis Academy for 20 years as teacher, coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Athletic Director, and currently as Assistant Principal,” principal Ann O’Hagan-Cordes wrote. “We pray that others who are inflicted with this disease recover and return to their families. We pray for those on the front lines, trying their best to save lives, that they themselves are safe.”

Lewinger also served on the board of education of the Franklin Square Union Free School District, where he was elected in 2015 and served as the board’s president in 2016, school district officials said in a press release.

“While the loss of life to this terrible virus is tragic, the passing of one of our own hits us particularly hard,” Schools Superintendent Jared Bloom wrote Sunday. “While most of our staff are working remotely, please know that we have a team available to support staff, children, or parents who may need to talk.”

Best known for his contribution to Mary Louis Academy, Lewinger last year was named one of the school’s “Trailblazers,” according to a report in the Queens Chronicle.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
